Pets That May Outlive You

Parrots, tortoises, some turtles and other long-lived pets can live for decades, sometimes longer than their owners. A little planning means they are not left without a home.

What to do now

  • Name a person. Choose someone who has agreed to take your pet, and tell them what the animal eats, needs and how it behaves.
  • Write it down. Keep your pet’s species, age, diet, vet and medicines in one place your family can find. Put your wishes in writing and tell a trusted person where it is.
  • Ask a sanctuary about your will or trust. Some sanctuaries will take a bird or reptile named in a will or trust, even when they are full. They often ask for ongoing support toward the animal’s care, so ask early. An attorney can help you set it up.
  • Know your options if you can’t keep your pet today. Rescues and clubs below take surrenders or rehome animals, though many are at capacity. Contact several.
